A general rule for higher-quality photos is:

"Never, ever, EVER use the camera's built-in flash."

When I finally forced myself to always avoid my camera's built-in flash, my photography improved dramatically. I will still use the built-in flash when I need to document something quickly (like if I get into a car accident at night), but that's it.

Now, sometimes you can try diffusing it with a white piece of paper, but in general the in-camera flash will usually produce sub-standard results when it comes to lighting. Exposure hotspots, red-eye, etc. are all characteristics of using an in-camera flash.

Try to take a few more shots like this using different lighting techniques. You'll be able to learn and get a feel for lighting pretty quickly that way.

Good luck!
